The Center for Science for Development – Assistive Technology and Accessibility in Brazilian Sign Language (CCD-TAAL) brings together researchers from the University of Campinas (UNICAMP), the University of São Paulo (USP), and the Institute for Technological Research (IPT) in a multidisciplinary initiative developed in partnership with the São Paulo State Secretariat for the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.
CCD-TAAL’s mission is to advance knowledge and develop innovative technologies that help overcome communication barriers between Deaf and hearing communities, fostering greater accessibility, autonomy, and inclusion.
One of the Center’s main research challenges is the development of technologies for automatic translation between Brazilian Sign Language (Libras) and Portuguese. To address this challenge, its research draws on recent advances in artificial intelligence, machine learning, computer vision, and natural language processing, with particular emphasis on deep neural network models.
By bringing together scientific research, technological innovation, and societal needs, CCD-TAAL seeks to translate advances in artificial intelligence into practical solutions that expand opportunities for communication and interaction between Deaf and hearing people.
CCD-TAAL is funded by the São Paulo Research Foundation (FAPESP) under grant no. 2024/00914-7.
